Artisan
Chocolate Bar

OVERVIEW
A series of artisan luxury chocolate bar packaging marries Alexander Calder's art style with Walter Baker Chocolate Company - the first company to produce chocolate in the US.

My goal was to redesign the chocolate bars for Walter's bakers chocolate, and bring them back to the market!

THE CHALLENGE
Take the challenge.
Even though I don’t like chocolate, I’m a big fan of the packaging. There are so many varieties, and styles out there with great design but I wondered how to design one that stands out?
Unique & Beautiful
I first pretend myself as a consumer, then go to the store to see which one will I pick.

I thought I'd pick out the prettiest the most to me, and stand in front of them. But they are looking so good!

This thought made me realize if I want to stand out from the crowd, it's gotta be very unique and beautiful.
Question was: How?
INSPIRATION
Calder's work.
I was assigned to design artisan chocolate bars.
After researching, I found Alexander Calder's (1898-1976) works very intriguing. He was a painter, and sculptor and best known for inventing the Mobile. He liked using Bold, primary colors in his work. I love much of his work but it was his wire sculptures that really motivated and inspired me for this project.
IDEATION & ARTWORK DEVELOPEMENT
I started sketching the artwork based on the inspiration of Calder's wire sculptures. I made the artwork as Calder's wire sculpture as possible, except this is digital.

The concept was based on bisexual identity, " Whatever".

I envision this artwork would be a cover for the bar series, and they should be connected.
THE CURRENT BRAND
" It's Bakers, and It's delicious "
A fun fact, many people are familiar with the name "Baker's for baking," but many are unaware that it is the original Walter Baker, therefore I wanted to reintroduce the brand through chocolate bars.

History:
It was founded in Boston in 1780, and was the first company in the United States to produce chocolate. Three generations of the Baker family ran the business until late 1800s when it was sold to General Foods. It is still in business under Kraft Foods, but they exclusively sell baking chocolate and are only known as Baker's.
THE NEW BORN
Bring back the luxury feel.
Walter's Baker was a premium brand in the mid-eighteenth century, and chocolate was an expensive drink, a luxury reserved for.

So I said, let's bring it back.
FINAL PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS
  • On the individual bars, the art wraps around to the back where there is a section to describe the artist.
  • The artwork connects to the other bars in the series. This looks unique on the shelf but also encourages people to buy the full collection.
  • This is a special edition chocolate bar series inspired by Alexander Calder, and it's collectible. The idea behind it is to design more series based on other contemporary artists' artwork in the future.
